I'm not sure I get it. Why would people file a lawsuit against the church instead of the individual responsible?

In the case of the paedophilia lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Church, it is usually argued that the hierarchy knew about claims of improper conduct on the part of specific priests and yet transferred them from parish to parish without limiting their access to children or reporting crimes to the police, therefore the Church itself and not just the accused priests were culpable.
