Weighty Problems

Hey Richard,

You can thank the Federal government for this one. The head of the FDA back around 1900, when high fructose corn syrup was an illegal food additive, stated that if we ever allow it to be used as a food additive we will become a nation of diabetics. He was right.

A Dr. Al Sears from Florida has a fascinating analysis of the situation where he basically relates that back in 1977 the McGovern Senate Committee released their Dietary Goals for the United States, and arrived at the conclusion that fat was a primary health concern. Following in the early 80's the National Institutes of Health started recommending the ban fat diet, this then became the news of the day and the food industry followed with all of their low fat foods. Everyone started lowing their fat intake and buying especially formulated low fat foods.

However, since taste comes from fat, the food industry replaced the fat with high fructose corn syrup, Americans then began replacing their fat intake with increasing amounts of refined carbohydrates. The rise in obesity rates coincides with the governmental mandate to ban fat from the American diet and the food industry response to that.

The hormone insulin regulates the body's fat stores, when you eat fat there is zero insulin response, so you don't get fat by eating fat, you get fat by eating sugar which causes an insulin response and thus you build more fat.

Of course, the meteoric rise in soft drink consumption plays into this as well, but still the "obesity epidemic" that the government warns us about today has it's genesis in that same governmental dietary plan.

I am reminded of Ezekial 34 also, the denunciation of the fat shphards and the skinny sheep. Not just physically but spiritually, the leaders of religion largely pamper themselves and leave the flock starving for spiritual nourishment:

Ezekiel 34
1And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?

3Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock.

4The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.

5And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.

6My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them.

7Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;

8As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

9Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;

10Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

11For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

12As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

13And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.

14I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.

15I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD.

16I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

Thomas:

So, it's really the govt's fault that there are so many fatsos? What about super big gulps and the Mc Fat burgers?

Pergamum,

If your question intends to imply that I was saying that individuals are no longer responsible then it is skewing my statement. They are responsible, but they are heavily influenced by official governmental decrees, the food industry that conforms to them and creates products consistent with them, and then the massive advertising, news and social influences carrying them out, as it simply doesn't leave one in an independent status to make choices not heavily influenced thereby.

What's ludicrous is that after all the hubbub about McDonald's "Super Size" meals died down, they just renamed the humongous fries & sodas "Large"...

"Would you like another 1000 calories with that burger, sir?"

Another thing: They no sooner got on the "South Beach" bandwagon offering salads. Most of the dressings are fattening, and they started in with the add-ons like fried chicken, etc. And we're right back where we started.
