I am someone who wishes I could fix a computer with a wrench (not that I am that good with those either). I have a few letters of recommendation scanned to my computer so that I can upload them while I am applying for jobs. However the files are too big for me to upload to certain websites and I was wondering how I could shrink the pdfs.

You could try opening the pdf file and then going to "save as" and saving the file again. In doing so, you will create a second file that should be smaller.
