I came across a short bio on Christianity Today that said John Milton was a Puritan. Now I know that site is not a bastion of scholarship but are they right? I checked the wiki article about him and it seems some of his theological views may have been suspect. So was he a Puritan, or perhaps influenced by Puritans writing in a Puritan age?

I think you could say Milton was a political puritan. He was anti-prelacy and opposed to restrictions on non-anglican preachers. He was also a republican during the English civil war. He warned against Charles II, so he would be thought to be aligned with Puritans. I also think his political writings presage the spirit of the American Revolution, For what it's worth.
