This is actually a good point.
Most no longer know where phrases like "born for a time such as this" come from.

He's lamenting the general retarded state of academics. He's complaining about the lack of knowledge from a practical literary standpoint, not on grounds of faith. His complaint holds true though: people aren't familiar with the context of a lot of literature, including literature based on Biblical history, because they're just plain ignorant thanks to our education system.
