I sold some stuff I never used to purchase a nice camera. My wife had a baby 4 weeks ago, and I wanted a new camera for video and good quality pictures, but didn't want to deal with long detachable lenses that SLRs need. I purchased a Sony DSC-HX100v, and it was the best decision I've made in a long time. It take phenomenal pictures of your kids. I'll show a few examples. In addition, it has just an amazing zoom. I have taken pictures of the moon several times and it just blows me away.
Last night I tried to zoom in on a star to see what I could get. I didn't realize it, but I was zooming in on Jupiter and ended up getting a picture of it along with two of its moons!
If you need a camera, this is the one to get. It will be the standard for superzooms for the next few years.
