Bernard of Clairvaux, when he seemed to be on his deathbed:
I confess that I am not worthy and that I cannot obtain the kingdom of heaven through my own merits, but my Lord Jesus Christ possesses that kingdom through a double right -- through the inheritance from his Father and through the merit of his suffering. He is satisfied with the first and he presents me with the other. Thus, I credit the kingdom on myself as his gift and am not ashamed.
