I haven't given much time to studying the "cloud" but certain aspects of it really bother me. Having all of my informatino "out there" is not a comforting thought. Backing up is always a good idea with any information that you desire to save!

Your information is already "out there" from what I can tell. That computer you just used to post your response is on the Internet. The irony is that most people think their data is more secure because it's on their own computer than on a hard drive somewhere else on the Internet. The reality is that most people do little or nothing to protect their data. I feel better about putting a shared document on Google Docs than trusting the security of other people's machines given what I've seen of the way most people treat internet security.

I agree. I've lived through some 7 or 8 hard drive failures and have had one cloud-based email failure (not google, but a web-based email system from a former ISP).

I'm very happy storing important files in the cloud as well as on a local hardrive. I also maintain an array of archive hardrives, and (belt and suspenders) active files are also on flash drives.

But having all that stuff backed up in the cloud just makes me sleep better. I'm fairly convinced that reputable cloud storage is less likely to fail than all of my local solutions, but I still like having them.

As for the gmail backup, it looks like a good idea, but I haven't felt the need for it because I run all my mail through Outlook and regularly sort and backup those files.

Oh I understand that my data is "out there" so to speak! But I do protect my data and take special care to guard what does go "out there!" I work in computer forensics and get to poke around in other people's hard drives all the time and it is amazing what is there. Yet, having my data on my hard drive, behind my security just seems, I don't know, more secure to me, than having it out there on another hard drive somewhere. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I am still sorting through the practical implications of the cloud. It is definitely a great idea to back up that data! On that we can agree.
