NHL Playoffs

If the Pirates really wanted to compete they wouldn't trade away players like Jason Bay. Who did they get for him anyway?

Jason Bay had no future in Pittsburgh. We got our starting 3B (who is hitting .308), our starting RF (who after an atrocious April is hitting .320 since), and a future #2 Starter now at single-A.

My husband says the Pirates do this to him every year...look great, then disappear in July. We'll see!!

I really don't think we should have traded Bay, but I don't know anything about who we got for him. It may have been smart.

Funny how the NHL Playoff thread became the MLB Season thread :p

Maybe if the NHL knew anything about marketing and actually allowed people to watch its games, everyone would be interested. When I was little, hockey was huge. (But the Pens were great back then, so maybe it was just in Pgh.)

Ugh, don't get me started on the idiocy of the NHL Commissioner. His name is like a four letter word here in Canada. I don't get how a man can be so despised for so long and yet still keep his job.

I suppose Nate McLouth had no future in Pitt either and that's why he was traded to Atlanta today?

WHAT are we doing?????????????????????????????

Here it comes!

A flying octopus...

All slimy and yucky - and smelling of cheap vinyl... From the rafters of the Joe...

(We'll have Datsyuk back for Game 4. We are sitting pretty, but some of us not for long, given that one heave of a real octopus from the stands onto the ice gets one thrown out of the Joe without ceremony or recognition... :duh:  )

Margaret

P. S. I will never forget the first hockey game I ever saw. I was 8 and it was at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. I was there with my father and two younger brothers. When the third period started, some guy sitting right behind me reared back and threw an octopus onto the ice. It landed not far from the boards... The guy was congratulated by all seated around him, and stadium employees as well. How far we've fallen...!

I wouldn't be surprised if stadium execs planted fans in the stands to throw octupi just for the publicity.

Have any of you been to Qdoba Mexican Grill? Their pork BBQ Burrito is credited for the Penguin's win.

It makes total sense for Pittsburgh. Nate McLouth is a career .261 hitter who, if you take out April and May last year, is a 15 hr a year guy and the Pirates received 2 of the Braves top 10 prospects plus a guy who can come in and start today for an average OF.

The only reason this is "shocking" is because Nate was so well liked.

Maybe, but there really are enough doofuses around here who'll get themselves oiled up at Hockeytown or wherever & bring an octopus in a jar into the stadium just to throw it - and brag to their friends that they got pitched out for doing it. Octopi thrown from the stands and sometimes landing in pieces do make quite a mess on the ice & clean-up takes a few minutes... The players don't like it; they were born long after this time-honored tradition started and some in places where many had never heard of "Detroit." Fans can't say they weren't warned - there are signs all over the place warning about not bringing octopi into the Joe.

Wasn't he an All Star last year? He has a fielding percentage of 1.000 so far this year. It seems to me that, despite what the fans say, the Pirates' strategy of trading their best talent for 'prospects' hasn't worked. Does anyone remember a man named 'Bonds'?

I really think it is sabotage. I don't get how they can be so blatant, or who is paying them, but I honestly think something illegal is happening.

I wish Mark Cuban would just buy the Pirates!

1) It is not fair, to use theology, to impute the sins of the previous administrations on the present administration. The administration previous to this one left the farm system so bad that we basically had to start out as an expansion team.

2) He was only an All-Star because the MLB requires a player from each team. Nate is at best a 6 hitter on a good team. He is a career .261 hitter.

3) Reading the "Sabemetrics" guys shows Nate, while having a good fielding percentage, has terrible range. McCutcheon is a huge upgrade at defense.

4) Bonds left as a Free Agent and was never going to stay in Pittsburgh. The Bucs messed up by not trading him when they had the chance.

Do not read too much propaganda. This has nothing to do with money. Don't listen to people who bash Nutting all the time. He has only been the principle owner since 2007.

Thanks for the education, Mr. Glaser. If McLouth wasn't the best player on the team, who is?

Like Branch Rickey told Ralph Kiner in 1953 the season after he hit 50-homers:

"We lost 100 games with you, we can lose 100 games without you."

...and Nate is no Ralph Kiner. Nate is a serviceable player on a good team. He is a "Trot Nixon"-type. A role-player on a championship team. However since he played for the Bucs he looks like a HOF.

Craig Wilson hit 29 Home Runs in 2004. Now he is out of baseball.

I never said Nate was not the best player on the team, jsut that he is highly overrated.

As moderator, I should infract myself for taking this thread off topic. I will do some push ups.

Meanwhile, the series is tied 2-2!

Will the visitors win a match in this series?

I actually haven't read any propaganda! I guess Pittsburghers just naturally like to feel like sports victims/underdogs, what have you! I made that assessment on my own, since nobody here in VA cares about baseball.

But I really think Cuban could and would create a fantastic team.

Speaking of sports victims/underdogs...the Pens are being DESTROYED:(

Wow! I thought the Penguins were finished after the last blow out, but they will not go away. Can the visitors win a match? They have one more chance.

Maybe now the weather will warm up, now that the ice has melted. Congrats to Pittsburgh fans.

Hasn't been done in 30 years since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. WE ARE FAMILY! Good to see the Stanley Cup back in the Burgh!
