I'm looking to distill some early reformation narrative(s) of church decline. That is, I'm trying to discover the historical narrative that the Reformers were telling about how the early church fell from its pristine condition into the mess they were confronting. The subject matter includes: 1) Which post-biblical theological authorities were better/worse; and 2) when specific errors were introduced, and by whom.

I know of Die Alte Glaube by Bullinger, which is essentially a history of the church from Adam to Bullinger's present day. Is there any place where Calvin tackles the historical question of innovations? I'd also be interested in Melanchthon, Luther, or lesser figures.
