Church history and the established church

I have been long fascinated with the established church. The debate between establishmentarians and non establishmentarians has seen some wonderful arguments on both sides of the spectrum. I was wondering if there are any arguments or works that folks have found helpful in the broad spectrum of church history on this debate. Thanks much, Robert
