Avatar Requirements

I'm trying to resize an image of myself to use as my avatar but am having difficulties meeting the maximum requirements. I can easily resize the image's physical dimensions, but the filesize is too big. I've tried lowering the pixel/inch but the file is still too big. Anyone know how to get the file size under 19k without bringing the dimensions down to an unusable size?

Many photo editing programs will allow you to compress a jpg or gif file. Sometimes it may say "Optimize for Web". What program are you using for editing?

Thanks Steve, that did it! Adobe Photoshop Elements had that feature and it worked flawlessly.
