This is from Robert Preus' Theology of Post-Reformation Lutheranism, pp. 105-106.

1. Prayer; God is the true teacher in theology. We must commune with him.
2. Familiarization with Scriptures; The gospel can only be known from God’s special revelation, as true of chief articles of the faith.
3. Practice of the Summa; we should synthesize (soomateoeides; hupotupoosis); formation of Scriptural topics.
(Fourth and Fifth): Dialectics and Rhetoric; they help rearrange loci. Properly used, this helps bring clarity to theology.
6. Language study; Goes without saying
7. Patrology and Commentaries; we receive a literary heritage. Not necessarily always correct, but neither to be spurned.
8. History
9. Philosophy: while it knows nothing of the gospel, it can illuminate much of ethics and politics.
10.The Cross and Affliction; Luther’s tentatio. It teaches us the humility of Christ. The Gospel is consolation only to the heart that has been crushed.
