I’m interested in exploring the relationship between the Puritan movement and Baptist traditions, particularly those that align with the 1689 London Baptist Confession.

Were there any groups or individuals recognized as Baptist Puritans who adhered to this confession?

Additionally, I’ve encountered the names Nehemiah Coxe and Benjamin Keach. Were they considered Puritans in their beliefs and practices, especially in relation to the 1689 confession?

Thanks for your insights!

Technically speaking, Puritans are those who wanted to reform the Church of England. The Reformed Baptists came out of the Congregationalists in the 1620s or 1630s if I recall and were not interested in reforming the church of England.

Coxe and Keach were very important English Reformed Baptists in the 1600s. They have much in common with the Puritans but since they were establishing churches separate from the Church of England, technically would not be "Puritan." Maybe Puritan-esque?

The difficulty is how the term "Puritan" is used and whether it is applied narrowly (as I did above) or more loosely in terms of commonality in theology and practice.

Yes, depends on what you mean by "Puritan." The Particular Baptists were similar to the Puritans in their view of concerns like the regulative principle of worship. They had more of a theological connection to the Congregationalists of the time like Goodwin & Owen.
Perhaps the only Baptist that most people refer to as a "Puritan" is John Bunyan.
