Hey all, I noticed a footnote in the student version of the ESV Study Bible in chapter 1 of the Song of Songs. Note 1, on the first "speaker identification "She"" , says "The translators have added speaker identifications based on the gender and number of the hebrew words".

Anyone know what the relevance of the number of words might be?

Thanks for any help.

"Number" in words refers to whether they are singular, dual, or plural. When the daughters of Jerusalem speak, it's multiple individual speaking as one, like a chorus. The Hebrew words will reflect that situation by using the plural number rather than the singular.

It's also important to remember that gender refers to language, never to penis or vagina. That's a casualty we have suffered in the culture wars. Sex refers to genitalia; gender does not.
