The sweetest gift

a mere housewife

Not your cup of tea
The sweetest gift you gave me was not consciously
Received -- I saw you loving me;

I grew up in your patience, and your selflessly
Unfailing willingness to have me
Near you every day,

Though I was helpless -- though I had all grace
To learn and none to give --
Though I could never answer to your thoughts
Because my mind was still unformed --

You never asked for anything, but just to have
Me near you, in return --

Though company like mine could only be
An exercise in patience, self denial, bearing my fragility
Within your own.

But this was not the sweetest gift: I saw all this.
The sweetest gift was one day, on my own,
When I could not be near you -- when I turned
And understood that all the love you lived
For me

Was always His.

Thank you, dear Nancy -- Happy Mother's Day :) ((( hug ))) We are all so much more blessed than we begin to fathom in these earthly years; but I do fathom that you are one of my special blessings :).
