The Jews did not believe?

Here we see the Jews saying they believe His works but not that Jesus is God.

"For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God."

But here I see Jesus saying they do not believe His works and that He is God.

"38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him."

True. The Jews were trying to find a middle ground to keep the people happy. They were politicians, after all. But Jesus knew their hearts.
