The face is the noblest of the exterior parts of man, as in which God's image doth shine forth, and is therefore called 'the glory of God,' 1 Cor. 11:7.

Thomas Goodwin, A Discourse of Christ the Mediator (London, 1642) in The Works of Thomas Goodwin (12 vols, Edinburgh: James Nisbet, 1861-66), 5: 266.

N.B. The appeal to 1 Corinthians 11:7 was needless, in my view, but the general point is still true.
