I guess I'm showing my age, but I REALLY love some of the old Stax music. Just about anything by Otis Redding. Then too there was Eddie Floyd, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, etc. (Though I never cared much for Booker T. & the MGs or The Bar-Kays; instrumentals were never my thing.)

BTW, it was Otis Redding who really got things going at the Monterey Pop Festival back in '67. Many will point to Jimi Hendrix (whose appearance WAS a watershed moment). But it was actually Otis who turned things around.

"These Arms of Mine" always gives me goosebumps. However, I've never really liked "Sitting on the Dock (of the Bay)."

BTW, the Fantastic Johnny C, though not Stax, still had a great hit in the "Stax fashion." Can anyone name it?

P.S. "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies was part of the soundtrack of "Boynton Beach Club." :p

Man...this thread is about to make me cry!

Two other great groups from the Stax family were the Staples Singers (Pops, Mavis, and everybody) and the Emotions (before they were known as the 'female Earth, Wind and Fire'). I've heard some awesome stories about Mavis Staples watching our for the younger artists and keeping the drug dealers away from them.

I often wonder what music would be like today if Stax Records didn't get shut down...
