I been thinkin about dis lately and here are some songs that I can relate to (although I do not endorse everything in the song; interpret me in the best possible light--nah, I will just delete the questionable lines at the risk of losing aesthetic value). Of course, you have to have the music in the background and I can't help you there.

Lone Wolf, by Hank Williams Jr
There aint no man gonna invade my territory;
there aint nobody out there gonna mess with me
because I'm big and hard and battle-scarred and getting long in the tooth
desperate and hungry and got nothing to Lose.

I'm a lone wol.f I've been chased and I've been bit.
I'm a lone wolf. They like to shoot at me but they miss.
Yeah I'm a lone wolf and I ain't never been trapped,
and God help the people that think they got me cornered at last.

I've been hunting.I've been tracking. I've been running since I was 3,
born in Louisiana Swamp, moved with the pack to Tennessee.
Raised by black and white dogs to some country, some rock-n-roll.
They said now boy your gonna have to quit your howlin soul.

I'm a lone wolf and I no longer run with the pack.
I am a lone wolf.I don't ever look back.
Hey I am a lone wolf out here on the prowl and most of us have been penned up but I'm still running wild.

Hey I'm a lone wolf.I've been chased and I've been bit.
Yeah I am a lone wolf this ole dog knows all the tricks.
Hey I'm a lone wolf.Still hungry and I'm on the prowl,
and most of us have been penned up but Bocephus is running wild.

When I was going through my divorce and separation from my wife Puddle of Mudd sang a few songs that really related.

'She....Hates Me' was one of them.
'Blurry' was another.

Nickelback sang a song called 'To Bad' also that hit the spot during that same time.

For some reason I listened to a lot of Rock during that time. I was pretty torqued. I generally don't listen to much Rock and Roll.

Before my conversion I occasionally identified with a personal anthem. Some particulars included Steve Miller's "The Joker," the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" and Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again."

Post-conversion I identified with "Pledge My Head to Heaven" by Keith Green. Now I find myself content to identify with the "sweet Psalmist of Israel." :sing:

I have pretty strong libertarian leanings so I always liked Charlie Daniels song that said "I ain't askin' nobody for nothin', if I can't get it on my own...if you don't like the way I'm livin' just leave this long haired country boy alone." I don't remember the exact name.

Then I like to think
Hank Jrs song called 'Country boy will survive' sort of fits me and Lynard Skynard's Freebird always hit something in me as well.

There are some Ted Nugent songs that used to fit my attitude a little too much too. I have calmed down a little now.

Theme from Rawhide

Rollin, rollin, rollin,
Though the streams are swollen. Keep them doggies movin'
Rawhide!

Rain and wind and weather. Hell-bent for leather. Wishin my love was by my side.
All the things I´m missin. Good vittles, love, and kissin are waiting at the end of my ride

Chorus
Move "˜em on, head "˜em up. Head "˜em up, move "˜em on. Move "˜em on, head "˜em up Rawhide
Count "˜em out, ride "˜em in. Ride "˜em in, count "˜em out. Count "˜em out, ride "˜em in Rawhide!

Keep movin, movin, movin. Though they´re disapprovin keep them doggies movin Rawhide!
Don´t try to understand "˜em, just rope, throw, and brand "˜em. Soon we´ll be living high and wide.
My hearts calculatin. My true love will be waitin, Be waitin at the end of my ride.
Rawhide!

Ditto to Charlie Daniels ("Simple Man") and "Country Boy Can Survive."

This is another of my existential favorites:

"Wanted: Dead or Alive"

It´s all the same, only the names will change
Everyday it seems we´re wasting away
Another place where the faces are so cold
I´d drive all night just to get back home

Chorus:
I´m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I´m wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it´s not for days
And the people I meet always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell the day
By the bottle that you drink
And times when you´re all alone all you do is think

Chorus

I walk these streets, a loaded six string on my back
I play for keeps, ´cause I might not make it back
I been everywhere, still I´m standing tall
I´ve seen a million faces an I´ve rocked them all

I´m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I´m wanted dead or alive
I´m a cowboy, I got the night on my side
I´m wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

"Blaze of Glory"

"I wake up in the morning
And I raise my weary head
I got an old coat for a pillow
And the earth was last night's bed
I don't know where I'm going
Only God knows where I've been
I'm a devil on the run
A six gun lover
A candle in the wind

When you're brought into this world
They say you're born in sin
Well at least they gave me something
I didn't have to steal or have to win
Well they tell me that I'm wanted
Yeah I'm a wanted man
I'm colt in your stable
I'm what Cain was to Abel
Mister catch me if you can

I'm going down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going down in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm no one's son
Call me young gun

You ask about my consience
And I offer you my soul
You ask If I'll grow to be a wise man
Well I ask if I'll grow old
You ask me if I known love
And what it's like to sing songs in the rain
Well,I've seen love come
And I've seen it shot down
I've seen it die in vain

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
'Cause I'm going down in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm a devil's son
Call me young gun

Each night I go to bed
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
No I ain't looking for forgiveness
But before I'm six foot deep
Lord,I got to ask a favor
And I'll hope you'll understand
'Cause I've lived life to the fullest
Let the boy die like a man
Staring down the bullet
Let me make my final stand

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
and I'm no one's son
Call me young gun
I'm a young gun"

Of course, I don't agree with the theology in the song, per se, but in my wannabe outlaw days, I liked the song.

Desperado (see Seinfeld  )

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
But I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you
(let sombody love you)
You better let somebody love you
before it's too late

Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... don´t live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you´ll find love,
And don´t forget son,
There is someone up above.

(chorus)
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Won´t you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man´s gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(chorus)

Boy, don´t you worry... you´ll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(chorus)

Randy,

I'd peg you for Montgomery Gentry's "Speed" based not only what you've been through in the last 5 years, but also on your love for fast cars.

This little ole song "You Know Like I Know" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (homeboys from my neck of the woods growing up) has got me through many a rough time:

to take a look and walk away
isn't a stand man
to speak the words that everyone's heard
isn't the way man
everybody knows
all things must come and go
but
you know like I know that
everything's gonna be alright
people just come and go
they don't know what's right
till they're gone

your sun will rise and set today
just don't you worry
and everything will come your way
just don't you hurry
take a little time
and find you some peace of mind
then
you'll know like I know that
everything's gonna be alright
people just come and go
they don't know what's right
till they're gone

nah-nah-nah
nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah
nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah
nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah...

Andrew,
Good song - one that I've listened to a lot. I tend to listen to the whole Desperado album, esp. the last track (Doolin Dalton/Desperado resprise) at the end of school quarters . . .

Their Album Scars and Tattoos is very good. It is the only album I have by them. I don't really own much secular music. I have a lot of Classical, Sacred Hymns, and a lot of older Christian Contemporary stuff. I love John Michael Talbot's music even though he is Roman Catholic. I have almost every album he has done.

When I heard the song "I am a rock" by Simon and Garfunkel last week, this thread came to mind. As I listened to that old favorite, I thought, "That's me, before I was saved...and to some extent now"

I am a Rock
A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don't talk of love,
Well, I've heard the word before.
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Both Sides Now -- Joni Mitchell

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere,
I've looked at clouds that way.

But now they only block the sun,
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done,
But clouds got in my way.

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and ferris wheels,
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real,
I've looked at love that way.

But now it's just another show,
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know,
Don't give yourself away.

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds,
I've looked at life that way.

Oh but now old friends they're acting strange,
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Good Way To Get On My Bad Side (Tracy Byrd with Mark Chesnutt)
(George Teren/Rivers Rutherford)

Little lady standin' next to me, isn't she a pretty thing
I'm the one that put that ring on her left hand
Another fella can tip his hat, and I'm as gentle as a pussy cat
But let it go much further than that and he's a dead man
Chorus: Cause that's a good way, that's a real good way
That's a good way to get on my bad side
Politician on my TV, says he's only lookin' out for me
Says he knows what the poor man needs in the long run
But every year he gives himself a raise, gets a chunk with every buck I make
Now he's talkin' like he wants to take my shot gun, no

That's a good way, that's a real good way
That's a good way to get on my bad side

Ain't lookin' for no trouble, don't wanna start no fight
Don't want more than I got comin', only wanna do what's right
Just treat me like I treat you, and we'll get along just fine
But Mister take one step across that line

That's a good way, that's a real good way
That's a good way to get on my bad side

I like Van Halen and I like George Jones
Charlie Daniels and the Rollin' Stones
Bocephus when he rocks and rolls still kills me
There oughtta be a law against cowboy rap, (you're right)
And all that boy band crap, a little sissy in a cowboy hat in country
No

That's a good way, that's a real good way
That's a good way to get on my bad side
------------------------------------------------------

Tracy Byrd sort of got in trouble on this song. He pretty much threw the guantlet down against modern country music.

Always loved this recitation done by C.W McCall and also by Red Sovine entitled "Roses for Mama". Most everytime I hear it or read the words my eyes fill with tears.

C.W. McCall Roses For Mama lyrics

[Spoken]
Well, I had two weeks vacation comin', so I thought I'd drive down to Florida: spend some time with an old friend, date a few girls, make a few parties, and just kinda live it up again.
So I packed up my car, and then I called my Mom in Tennesee, and told her what I planned to do. She said, Son, are you comin' by? And I said, Mom, I'm really pushed for time, but I'll see you in a week or two.
And I was drivin' through this little town in Georgia when I remembered: today's Mama's birthday. Well, I thought I'll just stop and wire some flowers. Shouldn't take too long; then I'll be on my way.
So I walked in a flower shop and the first thing I saw was this little boy, with his eyes full a' tears. I said, What's wrong, son? He said, Mama loves roses. And today's her birthday, and I haven't seen her in almost a year.
[Chorus]
Roses for Mama
Today's her birthday
Roses for Mama
Today's her birthday
He said, I live with Grandma now. But I promised Mama some roses, 'cause I talk to her all the time. I wanted to give her five, 'cause that's how old I am. But the lady said I couldn't buy 'em with just a dime.
Well, the little fella's story kind a' touched my heart, so I told the lady to give him what he wanted and charge it to me. Then I told her I needed to wire a dozen roses to my Mama, up in Chapel Hill, Tennessee.
I looked around, and the little boy was gone. But all of a sudden the door flew open and he come runnin' back in and he said, Mister, I forgot to thank you for the roses. He smiled, he shook my hand, and ran back out again.
Well, I started on out of town. And I was feelin' real proud of myself for thinkin' of my Mama and really carin', when I looked out the window and I saw that same little boy, kneelin', by a grave in an old cemetery.
I stopped my car and walked over to where the little boy was kneelin' down. And he smiled up at me and said, This is where my Mama stays. She says she sure does thank you for these pretty roses. Well that's when I had to walk away.
And I drove straight back to that flower shop and I said, Lady, have you sent those flowers to Tennessee? She said, No, not yet. I said, Well, nevermind. I'll just take them back with me.
[Chorus]
Roses for Mama
Today's her birthday
Roses for Mama
Today's her birthday

Aaron Tippin, "I wouldn't have it any other way."

I've walked the straight and narrow and I've worn a rebel's brand
Sometimes I've had to go without for bein' my own man
I've rallied to the cause when I knew the cause was right
I've cut against the grain, but I've kept my peace of mind
And I wouldn't have it any other way
If there's a price for bein' me, that's one I'll have to pay
I'll take the good and bear the bad until my dyin' day
I wouldn't have it any other way
Oh, I wouldn't have it any other way

I could have taken a beaten path every time trouble starts
I'd rather take a beatin' than to ever cross my heart
Stickin' to my guns, can't be sold or bought
Holdin' to my honor no matter what the cost

And I wouldn't have it any other way
If there's a price for bein' me, that's one I'll have to pay
I'll take the good and bear the bad until my dyin' day
I wouldn't have it any other way
Oh, I wouldn't have it any other way

I wouldn't have it any other way
