Simon J. Kistemaker (1930-2017), New Testament scholar, author, and educator, died on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at his home in St. Petersburg, Florida, according to his family. He was 87.
Per the family's statement, at the end, family members read Psalm 23 to Dr. Kistemaker. At the end of the reading, he was heard to say, "Amen." He then took a breath and passed into the presence of the Lord.
He will probably be best remembered for his New Testament commentaries. Upon the death of William Hendriksen in 1982, Dr. Kistemaker took up the task of completing the commentary series, "New Testament Commentary" (published by Baker), begun by his predecessor. It took him about 20 years (1982-2001) to round out the series.
He has heard the King say, "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master."
