Referring to the doctrine and practice of the Church of Scotland, the historian S. J. Brown writes:

Worship was defined by the Westminster Directory, with emphasis on the sermon, Scripture readings and the congregational singing of the Psalms, unaccompanied by musical instruments.

I don't know about the rest of his historical research, but he got that right.
If he were to record the present scenario in Scotland he would have to revise
the original.
