Is anyone familiar with the commentator Robert Johnstone? He published a commentary on Philippians in 1871 --he also has a commentary on James and 1 Peter.
My father-in-law recommends him highly, and would like to get more of his work. Are any of his commentaries still in print? Which are his best? Does anyone (Andrew?) know anything about his life and work?

I am not directly acquainted with his life or work, but Spurgeon says of his commentary on Philippians:

JOHNSTONE (ROBERT, LL.B., of Glasgow). Lectures on Philippians, with revised Translation, and Notes on the Greek text. 8vo. 7/6. Edinb., Oliphant. 1875. .4 noble volume. A real boon to the man who purchases it.

All of his commentaries are available at abebooks.com.

Andrew,

Thanks for the leads. I didn't see anything on 1 Peter there, but I did see a commentary on 1 Peter listed through bookfinder.com Is that a different Johnstone, or is that just a commentary that has not been reprinted?

Ruben,

I'm not sure about bookfinder, but Johnstone's commentary on 1 Peter is available at abebooks too (different search results).

Thanks again, Andrew. Alas, it's a little over budget. But I'm not grumbling --James is on it's way and I just got the 4 volumes of Post Reformation Reformed Dogmatics.
