Such is the corruption of our hearts that we even use persecution for righteousness' sake as an excuse for "taking it easy" spiritually. If we are falling into this error, Thomas Cartwright reminds us that we are in grave danger:

That to have suffered persecution for the truth’s sake, ought not to make us secure and careless of proceeding: for of them that suffer, some may fall away and perish, as did Alexander the Copper-smith, &c.
