I hope that you will excuse me for citing all these Lutherans. ;) When you think of Lutherans, Scots do not automatically spring to mind, yet Patrick Hamilton was one such person. Here are his views on the law-gospel distinction, though he says nothing with which later Reformed theologians would disagree:

... The nature of the law and the gospel.

  • The law sheweth us our sin.
  • The gospel showeth us remedy for it.
  • The law sheweth us our condemnation.
  • The gospel sheweth us our redemption.
  • The law is the word of Ire.
  • The gospel is the word of grace.
  • The law is the word of despair.
  • The gospel is the word of comfort.
  • The law is the word of unrest.
  • The gospel is the word of peace. ...
