Puritan Board Doctor
Oh goodbye booze for evermore
My boozing days will soon be o'er
Oh, I had a good time, and we couldn't agree
You see what booze has done for me

She's tore my clothes, she's swelled my head
So goodbye booze, I'm going to bed
Oh, I had a good time, and we couldn't agree
You see what booze has done for me

She swelled my head, she broke my heart
So goodbye booze, we now shall part
Oh, I had a good time, but we couldn't agree
You see what booze has done for me

She whispered low, how sweet it sounds!
Please take another ride on the merry-go-round
Oh, I had a good time, and we couldn't agree
You see what booze has done for me

It's too bad Poole couldn't get a handle on his drinking,

"He suffered heart failure after excessive drinking. After his last bout with drinking, Poole was examined by a local doctor in Eden, who administered an injection of some kind -possibly to bring him down from the alcohol. Poole died after the injection on the table, and there is speculation that the injection may have been a factor in his death."

According to the documentary, "Give Me the Banjo" he died at the age of 39 after drinking raw alcohol. Very sad.

A list of his songs: Charlie Poole

Not much biographical material is available on Charlie Poole. I picked up this paperback years ago and it is a pretty good read. RAMBLING BLUES: The Life & Songs of Charlie Poole: Kinney Rorrer: 9780904395013: Amazon.com: Books Has the lyrics to his recorded songs, some unpublished songs, a discography, and lots of photos and a short bio. Unfortunately I see it is now out of print and costs more than twice what it did ten or so years ago. For hard core fans of Charlie, or of that period.

Here is the author of the aforementioned book, Kinney Rorrer, performing my personal Charlie Poole favorite, "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down."

Jason, one more of Kinney Rorrer. Playing the very banjo that Charlie Poole recorded with. In this vid you can see the chords better if you want to try it.

Jimmy, I've watched the second vid numerous times, one of the best.

TylerRay, you got a deal.
