jdre.jpg We are now looking for old sponsors to renew and new sponsors to come on board to support the Naphtali Press Special Editions book series begun last year. We have successively produced two of three volumes with the third just about ready to go to print. These were Durham on Revelation vol. 1 of 3, Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici, and the to be published David Dickson sermons on Lamentations (from a surviving manuscript, first time in print, no link yet at RHB or copublisher). For what NPSE is about see here.

We are currently raising sponsorships for our second series year. For more about Naphtali Press Special Editions (NPSE), see here. For this year’s sponsorship options at the store see here. For quick pay options to bypass the store see here. The titles proposed for NPSE series year 2020-2021 are:

  • James Durham, A Commentary upon the Book of Revelation, Lectures on Chapters 4-11 (or possibly through 14). See prior year’s descriptions.
  • The Collected Shorter Works of George Gillespie. Volume 1 of probably 3 volumes. Gillespie is the author of two famous large books. A critical edition of his first book, Dispute Against the English Popish Ceremonies was published by Naphtali Press in 2013. A new edition of his magnum opus, Aaron’s Rod Blossoming, a work against state intrusion into the governing of the church, has yet to be produced and would be a significant undertaking. However, his many shorter works are in need of revision and others new found in manuscript included, which would make a nice collection of about two and probably three volumes. This proposed would be the first and would contain at least his Assertion of the Government of the Church of Scotland and the various anonymously published works.
  • Gisbertus Voetius, On the Sabbath and Feast Days. First time translation of De Sabbatho et Festis (1638). Not much by Voetius has been translated into English. This is an important work because Voetius was born in 1589, would have known men of the prior generation, was at Dort and clerked and issued its deliverances to print, and thus was well situated to canvas the Reformed view on this issue as it developed from the earlier days of the Reformed churches to 1638. The issue of the Sabbath, like in the UK, was not without controversy, nor the companion issue of what to do with the old holy days of Roman Catholicism. Because of the complexity of this work it will likely not be published until early 2022 unless the work proceeds a pace faster than anticipated. The translation will be done by David C. Noe.
See the links above for the Store for more payment options such as installment plans. Or use the single at once direct payment links via Paypal at the other link above (some levels require purchase in the Store).

First 21 hours is good progress but we have a ways to go to fully fund NPSE series year 2020-21. One of the special volumes in leather of the Scots Sermons (sermons before parlaiment by Gillespie, Rutherford, Baillie and Henderson) has been taken, leaving only one left. Some new reward levels and projects. It would be very cool to fund the Gillespie miniature portrait if that appeals and is anyone's financial wheelhouse. If it funds we could do a series of portraits (Rutherford anyone?). See here to get up to speed: https://www.naphtali.com/npse-2/npse2/

I am not seeing how long this is open for. If I missed this, sorry, but how long is this open for?

Till next spring or until the first title goes to print but that won't be likely until May or June if the same pattern holds as for 2019-21. However, the closer we get to then the different installment plans retire. I likely will change or retire the 12 month installment plans in October simply to avoid folks still paying off sponsoring 2020-21 when 2021-22 gears up in 12-14 months.

I added a sentence about potential target publication dates to the about page: https://www.naphtali.com/npse-2/npse2/

Several special items that go to sponsors at some of the higher levels of NPSE sponsorship for 2020-21 are no gone and spoken for. This includes the two only leather bound copies of the 2011 Naphtali Press title, Sermons Preached before the English Houses of Parliament by the Scottish Commissioners to the Westminster Assembly of Divines, 1643–1645. There are still two examples of the 2009 slipcover edition of the Westminster Larger Catechism manuscripts which is an even more elaborate publication. Only 26 of these were made (all numbered) and half of those are in seminary libraries I think; or a good number. Thanks to those who have sponsored so far. We are a quarter of the way to funding 2020-21 fully and also a quarter funded on the special need item of funding for translating Voetius on the Sabbath and Feast days. For further information and the titles proposed see above or at https://www.naphtali.com/npse-2/npse2/

If you’ve never been involved in helping make the publication of important Reformed books possible, this is your opportunity! Naphtali Press Special Editions is seeking sponsors for its second year of titles. The 2019-20 series raised funds to produce texts for three books, Durham on Revelation v1 (of 3), the London Provincial Assembly's Divine Right of Church Government in a critical edition, and the Scottish puritan David Dickson’s 1628 Sermons on Jeremiah’s Lamentations (2 published, Dickson at the printer now) and we are ready to begin work for 2020-21 with three more titles. For over thirty years Naphtali Press (NP) has published fine quality editions of Puritan, Presbyterian and Reformed literature. NPSE is a series of books co-published by NP and Reformation Heritage Books (RHB). RHB handles production and sales of the titles, while NP creates the text to be published. This involves significant development costs and hearkening back to the days of subscription based and even older era of patron supported publication, NPSE relies on annual sponsor drives to raise the funds to create these texts. Sponsors at the several levels offered receive copies of all titles produced that year, custom bookplates and recognition in the front sponsorship section of each volume, as well as other ‘rewards’ depending on sponsorship level. Sponsorship of NPSE makes it possible to publish puritan classics never yet republished, or undertake first time translation work, or transcription and editing for first time publication works still remaining in manuscripts.
