Hello! I need a good book that deals with church history, specifically the church fathers and the doctrines they taught. I am comfortable with my Reformation and Post-Reformation knowledge (at the moment, but I hope to continue learning), but I am terribly ignorant about church fathers and stuff up until the reformation. If the book deals with all of it that's fine too, I would read it. Also if the book is fairly readable (I got this book by John Owen recently and I have to read it REALLY slow) and affordable that would help too. Any suggestions?

A few years ago, I was looking for the same sort of reading material. Somehow I got wind of Carl Trueman's recommended reading on the early church. He recommended the following:

Wilken, The Spirit of Early Christian Thought
Chadwick, The Early Church
Pelikan, The Emergence of the Catholic Tradition

Having read all three, I would concur. I would also add Haykin, Rediscovering the Church Fathers.
