Held Fast

Puritan Board Freshman
Grateful for the search engine, I found some good former conversations on the subject of fasting, and a good reference to Samuel Miller on the subject. However, in our Lord's Day series through Matthew we arrive this Sunday on 6:16-18, and as I've done my textual and contextual work this morning in preparation, I thought to bring it here. I would ask not so much for topical information on the practice of fasting, but textual discussion on why fasting was included with giving and prayer, its inclusion in the larger sermon, etc. I am struck by the assumption of giving, prayer and fasting, and the admonition against doing so in a hypocritical manner. But I am still pondering its inclusion in the larger discourse.

Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
