Lord’s Day 17 (2018). “The Lord's Day is a sacred command and a gracious gift, a holy duty and a great joy” (Jon D. Payne). The pastoral theology of the puritans such as Richard Greenham and Nicholas Bownd revolved around the means of grace (word preached, read; sacraments; prayer, etc.) and the “great means of the means,” the avenue or instrument, whereby all these means of grace are made available to the people of God is the weekly gatherings on the Christian Sabbath or Lord’s Day (Cf. Introduction, Bownd, True Doctrine of the Sabbath, p. xxxv). “Christ is born, is circumcised, dies, rises again for us every day in the preaching of the Gospel” (Danæu). “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
