Farther, a life of holiness is necessary to the joy of the Spirit. Let not this observation be misunderstood. Holiness is necessary to joy, not as the ground upon which it rests, but as an evidence that we do rest on the foundation laid in the Gospel, while in its own nature it is an element of happiness. Whoever has exercised faith on Christ, is, by that act, renewed in heart and formed to holiness; and holiness thus becomes the evidence of the soul’s interest in Christ. Understanding the observation agreeably to this interpretation, we find holiness habitually recommended in the Scriptures as the handmaid of joy. …
