Our forefathers do not seem to have bought into the pious notion that "numbers don't matter" (which is in effect saying that people do not matter), as they were interested in widespread evangelistic success. Indeed, in order for the establishment principle to work, it requires large-scale evangelistic success. The Disruption Worthy, James Hamilton of London, thought that the formation of the Free Church of Scotland had opened the door for greater evangelistic efforts throughout the country:

It has secured great advantages for the evangelization of Scotland. ...
