Incorporating The Church

Just a quick question. Our church has looked into the possibility of buying a building but apparently you cannot purchase a building unless you are incorporated. My question is does incorporating the church affect it's relationship with the state? Is there another way to purchase property without being incorporated?

While I could speak in general terms as to the US, where the answer should be fairly straightforward, I wouldn't hazard a guess as to Canadian law, since Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" are largely unknown there (perhaps with the exception of 'Freedom from Want').
