Reformed Thomist

Puritan Board Sophomore
Saturday morning a brother and myself decided to check out Family Christian Bookstore in nearby suburban Burlington, Ontario. To our surprise, there was no Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, or T.D. Jakes to be had. But I did walk away with...

Wow. You must have quite a disposable income. Would you be my new friend?

Wow! None of those to be found at our local Family Christian Bookstore. Not even a rogue copy of Calvin's Institutes given it is his 500 yr anniversary.

Sadly, I can get the Institutes at a Barnes and Noble about 1/4 mile down the road.

You may be surprised at how much change a man can scrounge up for books when he doesn't have a wife, children, or girlfriend. Or car. And who gets his hair cut by his hairstylist mother.

What's really crazy is that this store has a giant basement full of second-hand theological books for sale, which I only learned about when I was checking out at the cash with the titles listed in the OP. I wasn't about to be spending any more money on books that day, but I went down there for a minute out of curiosity and spotted a bunch of Spurgeon, Packer, and Puritan stuff.

I'll definitely be hitting this place up again.

I accept, used, recently-read books of the Reformed and Puritan variety. I'll send you my address if you need it.

Looks like you gave in to a bad case of book-lust! :book2:

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you,
lest you have your fill of it and vomit it. (Proverbs 25:16, ESV)

Given the decline of the culture and faith in an region once vibrant with Presbyterian witness, there are probably tons of bookstores with great books to be had in the Toronto area.

Another one would be Dr. Hoff's Therapeutic Bibliotheca, at 217 Lee Avenue

Lol. You have described me, except that I do have a car. I use to buy so many books before I enrolled in school. :um:

I wish you the best in your reading!

Hopefully you are not like me. I am reading about 17 books at any give time. My 4 year old son asks me "Daddy, why are there so many books on your nightstand. Are you building a tower?"

Any given night I read one of them. I can't seem to ever finish one!

So much to read and so little time!

Last time I went into an FCB I could buy my own crown of thorns, sentimental wall hangings, and all kinds of figurines and candles with crosses on them. So glad you have such a great place to go!

There must be something wrong with that bookstore. Do you have any Puritan ninjas living in the area?

I read both of those books by RC Sproul and the book by David N. Steele, Curtis C. Thomas, and S. Lance Quinn. Those are good books.

I thought I was the only one with this peculiar problem!

are you sure you went into a Family Christian Store? the one where I live doesn't have anything like those titles! Then again, I haven't set foot in it in about a year. Am I the only one who buys all their books online? anyways, happy reading to you!

I believe this is an independent store which coincidentally (or not) shares the 'Family Christian' name with the U.S-based chain. The website seems to indicate this... and the inventory is just too well-selected for it to be a McChristian chain.

I agree with Andrew. We have one and it's 3/4 cards, trinkets, rosaries, and crucifixes. The rest is Osteen-genre junk. A few Bibles for window dressing. Maybe your local manager is Reformed and corporate doesn't know it.

Here's the US site: Family Christian Stores

Oh my, I am almost giddy. I have a great revelation for you:

You may thank two godly people for this wonderful place: Ed and Wilma Gringhuis. He is my district elder and he and his wife used to run that store in Burlington. They are wonderful people, but retired from the bookstore some years ago. It does seem that the present owners have continued on in the same tradition, though.

(I'm just dying to check out that basement, by the way!)
