Here are two books you should know about, if you don't already:
The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age by Leo Damrosch (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2019), 473pp.
Samuel Johnson, edited by David Womersley; 21st-Century Oxford Authors series (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018), 1,294pp.
The first book is a description of many aspects of 18th-century life, as centered around the members of the Literary Club, founded by Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1763. The book is a terrific read and is jam-packed with all sorts of interesting tidbits about life in England then. Martyn Lloyd-Jones loved the Puritans, but the 18th century was his favorite century. This book will show you why.
The second is an anthology of Johnson's writings. Unlike some literary anthologies, the excerpts are arranged chronologically, not by genre, so it's possible to get a sense of Johnson's growth and development as a writer.
Two books dedicated to one of the greatest Englishman of the 18th century, who was one of the first to be known as a "public intellectual."
