Blessings...

"Up for auction is a rare Civil War-era sabbatarian book, entitled THE WORKING-MAN’S SUNDAY And How to Spend It, published by the American Sunday-School Union in Philadelphia. Copyright date reads 1866; gift inscription on flyleaf dated 1867. 90 pages. A scarce book that exhorts working class individuals to spend their Sunday’s in observance of the Lord, and not in idle pursuits such as drinking, socializing, and other amusement activities. During the mid-19th century, Sabbatarianism, or the belief that Sunday should be a day of rest and prayer, grew in power as a reform movement, largely as a reaction to the influx of German and Irish immigrants in the 1850s who often spent their Sundays in public places, socializing and relaxing from a long week of work. As a reaction against these practices, many ministers began to exhort their followers to spend their Sundays quietly, and also exhorted businesses to shut their doors on Sunday in observance of the Sabbath. This tract was constructed from an excerpt from a British book about the working-classes, and then distributed through the Sunday-School Union in the United States. A very rare book, bound in original rose pebbled cloth, with gilt stamped title on front cover. Spine faded, but book in overall VERY GOOD condition. Good luck!"
