I know the lack of instruments in worship is odd to most today but it was the Puritan, NonConformist, and Presbyterian position until not more than 130 years ago. Girardeau's famous work and Dabney's commendation were the last gasp of defense against American Presbyterian, specifically Southern, defection of their principles in this regard.
