What are some of the greatest rock albums? Rock is a broad term and I'm looking for albums from the entire expanse of Rock music.

I'll start off, (Not ranking them mind)

The Who - Tommy
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

4 Way Street [Live] - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young
(1971 - the year I graduated from High School and entered the Army)

Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon". Was in the bilboard top twenty for sales for 1,285(that’s 25 years) weeks in a row. Thirteen of them in the top 10.

Chris
You must be a drummer. Every drummer I know loves Rush, and Dream Theater. Oh, and by the way, Dream Theater just happened to do a live" Dark Side of the Moon" d.v.d. they also played Echoes.

I have to throw Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour onto the list...

(Great stuff above, too!)

Rubber Soul, The Beatles (1965)
Abbey Road, The Beatles (1969)
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, Derek and the Dominoes (Eric Clapton) (1970)
Live at Fillmore East, The Allman Brothers Band (1971)
Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan (1975)

Achtung Baby-U2
OK Computer-Radiohead
Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd
XO-Elliott Smith
Sgt. Peppers-The Beatles
Trompe Le Monde-The Pixies
Live at the Fillmore East-Allman Brothers Band
The Man Who-Travis

Rubber Soul, The Beatles (1965)
Abbey Road, The Beatles (1969)
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, Derek and the Dominoes (Eric Clapton) (1970)
Live at Fillmore East, The Allman Brothers Band (1971)
Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan (1975)

Nice!

Does Miles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell count?

"Rock" really is a broad term, especially for someone like me, who enjoys all types of music.

I will say that 2008 was a horrible year for music, in my opinion. Not many outstanding albums. Not sure if this will be helpful to you, (or maybe it's too much info), but here are some of my favorites for each year: (I will keep updating this thread with more years (going backward), so you can see some of my favorites.)

2008
(1) Ashes Divide - Keep Telling Myself It's Alright (Alternative Rock)
- Favorite album for 2008. This is A Perfect Circle without Maynard.
(2) Earshot - The Silver Lining (Heavy Rock)
- This is one of my favorite bands. But sadly, I'm not impressed with their new direction. There are some great songs on here, though.
(3) Snow Patrol - A Hundred Million Suns (Brit Pop / Soft Rock)
- Another incredible offering.
(4) Warrel Dane - Praises To The War Machine (Heavy Metal)
- I really enjoyed Warrel's step away from Nevermore.
(5) Disturbed - Indestructible (Heavy Rock / Nu-Metal)
- If you like one song, you'll like them all.
(6) Black Tide - Light From Above (80's Metal)
- These kids can really rock. This was a breath of fresh air, for me.
(7) Tesla - Forever More (Hard Rock)
- Tesla gives us another great album
(8) WhiteSnake - Good To Be Bad (Hard Rock)
- David Coverdale is back!
(9) Candlebox - Into The Sun (Grunge / Alternative Rock)
- I've always been a Candlebox fan. I love Kevin Martin's soulful singing.
(10) Ours - Mercy - Dancing For The Death Of An Imaginary Enemy (Prog Alternative Rock)
- Vocals are still in the vain of Jeff Buckley. Very enjoyable.
(11) 10 Years - Division (Alternative Rock / Post Grunge)
- They still have a Tool-like sound. But in their own way. I enjoyed this album.
(12) Shinedown - The Sound Of Madness (Heavy Rock)
- I've seen these guys live. They really can do no wrong.
(13) StainD - The Illusion Of Progress (Alternative Rock / Post Grunge)
- I'm kinda in the middle with these guys. I like a couple songs on this album.

If something like this is too much info, let me know. :)
It's fun to do, though...

Edit: Here are some songs from the above albums that are some of my favorites:

Excluding greatest hits and movie soundtrack albums, these are my top four:

Boston (album - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Boston was a fantastic album, friends and me, we used to play the LP twice

through :)

I heard recently More than a Feeling on the radio, made me remember

older times, such a great song

Did Boston (band) did anythong more afterwards?

My goodness.... I can see that I've stopped listening to anything new at all. I've one of these groups (Whitesnake, not that I can think of a single song of theirs)... ;)

After thinking a bit further....

Tom Waits - Mule Variations

When it comes to pearl jam the easiest choice would be rearviewmirror.

The 90's have a good selection of Rock music

Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Mad Season - Above

Actually i was thinking of posting about best albums per decade. I like 90's rock and 60's and 70's. But the more i thought about it.... the more it really depends on what mood i am in.

So i would have to break it down by decade and mood.

Okay. Here's 2007. A little better than 2008, in my opinion.

2007
(1) Alter Bridge - Blackbird (Alternative Rock)
- An incredible 2nd album by Alter Bridge. I didn't think they could outdo their first, but they did.
(2) Operator - Soulcrusher (Alternative Rock)
- This is an awesome album, just make sure you get the CLEAN version. Interestingly, the singer sounds exactly like Chris Cornell.
(3) 3 - The End Is Begun (Progressive Rock)
- 3 is a very talented band. The singer/guitarist is a master. Seeing them live is a real treat.
(4) Fair To Midland - Fables From A Mayfly (Progressive Rock)
- This band is sorta weird, but in a good way.
(5) Amorphis - Silent Waters (Death Metal / Gothic Metal)
- Never been a fan of death vocals, but this band does it quite well. There are clean vox too.
(6) Megadeth - United Abominations (Heavy Metal)
- Dave Mustaine has really been putting his all into his new albums, and it shows. Great guitarwork.
(7) Redemption - The Origins Of Ruin (Progressive Metal)
- This is a friend's band. Extremely impressive. And he got Ray Alder of Fates Warning to sing!
(8) Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (Hard Rock)
- I really like the opening track. The rest of the songs have some value too.
(9) Helloween - Gambling With The Devil (Heavy Metal)
- A great comeback disc for Helloween. Very enjoyable.
(10) Kamelot - Ghost Opera (Melodic Power Metal)
- Ever since Kamelot got Roy Khan on vox, they've been amazing. Not sure I like the direction they've been going in, but I'm still a fan.
(11) Primal Fear - New Religion (Heavy Metal)
- Another really good album by Primal Fear. If you like Judas Priest, you might like these guys.
(12) Morgana Lefay - Aberrations Of The Mind (Power Metal)
- I'm a fan. But the vocals might be tough to get used to. :)
(13) Leatherwolf - New World Asylum (Heavy Metal)
- This is a rerelease of their 2006 album with original vocalist Michael Olivieri. A huge improvement!
(14) Crowded House - Time On Earth (Rock / New Wave)
- You can't go wrong with Crowded House.
(15) Destrophy - The Way Of The World (Hard Rock / Nu-Metal)
- I like these guys. This album is good, but it sorta disappointed me.
(16) Rush - Snakes & Arrows (Progressive Rock)
- Rush still sounds great. I like this album; needs more listens though.
(17) Epica - The Divine Conspiracy (Symphonic Gothic Metal)
- Simone has an angelic voice. Always a pleasure to hear.
(18) Lifehouse - Who We Are (Rock)
- I'm a fan of their music. This album sorta disappointed.
(19) Karnivool - Themata (Alternative Rock)
- I like this album, but the vocalist is a little odd. (maybe it's because their from Australia. JK)
(20) The Shins - Wincing The Night Away (Indie Rock)
- A very good offering. Always a pleasure to listen to this album.
(21) The Exies - A Modern Way Of Living With The Truth (Alternative Rock)
- This needs more listens, but The Exies stand a little separate from the generic alternative rock band for me.
(22) Paradise Lost - In Requiem (Gothic Metal)
- Really good band that's been around for a while. You need to be in the mood for this, though.
(23) Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots (Pop / Electronic)
- This is normally not my style, and is not a rock album. But I enjoyed listening to it every once in a while last year.
(24) Sixx: A.M. - The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack (Alternative Rock)
- Nikki Sixx actually put together a pretty good rock band. (And they sound nothing like Motely Crue)
(25) Anberlin - Cities (Rock / Emo)
- I get an emo sort of feeling from this band. I liked a few songs from this album though.
(26) Iron And Wine - The Shepherd's Dog (folk)
- I love this band. Super mellow. Very calming. I would've put this album way higher in the list, but I didn't want to renumber everthing. :)

Edit: Here are some songs from the above albums that are some of my favorites:

Another EDIT! -- I almost forgot an album that I totally loved from last year. I added Iron And Wine - The Shepherd's Dog in the list above. And check out this awesome tune from the album. "Resurrection Fern".

The Band - The Last Waltz
Pink Floyd's Dark side of the moon virtually needs no explanation

We like this from The Last Waltz--and it's our daughter's name:

Achtung Baby-U2
OK Computer-Radiohead
Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd
XO-Elliott Smith
Sgt. Peppers-The Beatles
Trompe Le Monde-The Pixies
Live at the Fillmore East-Allman Brothers Band
The Man Who-Travis

I'm not into the Pixies, but maybe I should be. I love all of your other choices!

After thinking a bit further....

Tom Waits - Mule Variations

I don't even know anyone else who has even heard of Mad Season, and Dirt is an awesome AIC album! Layne Staley had an incredible voice.

And somehow I've never even heard of rearviewmirror (the album) until now--I must have that! But if we were going non-greatest hits, Ten is still the best.

I totally agree. Mad Season's "Above" is a great album. And the song "Wake Up" truly showcases the best of Staley's vocals!

Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed" 1967 (A pioneering Progressive Rock album rather than a Hard Rock one.)

Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" 1973

Bad Company "Bad Company" 1974

Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" 1977

U2 "Joshua Tree" 1987.

Randy...I was with you until you said Rush...bleh.
