I'd have to cast my vote for "the best band you never heard of"... the 77s!

LZ vs. U2? LZ wins hands down. U2 only plays 3 chords and it is the same sound over and over. It's annoying quite frankly.

Some of the Lyrics of Genesis "Suppers Ready"

You, can't you see he's fooled you all.
Yes, he's here again, can't you see he's fooled you all.
Share his peace,
Sign the lease.
He's a supersonic scientist,
He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man.
Look, look into my mouth he cries,
And all the children lost down many paths,
I bet my life you'll walk inside
Hand in hand,
gland in gland
With a spoonful of miracle,
He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man.
We will rock you, rock you little snake,
We will keep you snug and warm.
With the guards of Magog, swarming around,
The Pied Piper takes his children underground.
Dragons coming out of the sea,
Shimmering silver head of wisdom looking at me.
He brings down the fire from the skies,
You can tell he's doing well by the look in human eyes.
Better not compromise.
It won't be easy.

666 is no longer alone,
He's getting out the marrow in your back bone,
And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll,
Gonna blow right down inside your soul.
Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon,
In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune.

And it's hey babe, with your guardian eyes so blue,
Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true,
I've been so far from here,
Far from your loving arms,
Now I'm back again, and babe it's gonna work out fine.

Can't you feel our souls ignite
Shedding ever changing colours,
in the darkness of the fading night,
Like the river joins the ocean,
as the germ in a seed grows
We have finally been freed to get back home.

There's an angel standing in the sun,
and he's crying with a loud voice,
"This is the supper of the mighty one",
Lord of Lords,
King of Kings,
Has returned to lead his children home,

I agree.

I like U2 and do think there is something to be said for quality in simplicity, but they are not even in the same league as Zeppelin. When I played Bass, U2 songs were the most boring and simple songs to play. Now JPJ's bass lines? They took time and practice and yet again he did not dominate (no Les Claypool stuff) but complimented Page and Bonham quite perfectly.

I wasn't :offtopic:

Did you notice that the first video I posted from The 77's was a cover of Led Zeppelin's cover of Blind Willie Johnson's Nobody's Fault But Mine? :p

Oh man, I just started listening to Led Zeppelin because their complete set of songs was $9.99 for unprotected mp3s one day on Rhapsody (now it is back to $59.99) and I thought I might as well check them out. I still haven't gotten through all 165 tracks, but I gotta say: they are shockingly good.

Yeah, but what about Adam Again?
Gene Eugene was incredible; died long before his prime.

And of course, any discussion of Led Zeppelin must include the following:

Loved Zeppelin, but the best (not most popular), but the best ever has to be...

ELP

Led Zep, and U2? thay were ok. I am a Prog rock kinda guy so my fave's would be, Camel, King Crimson, Genesis (w/Gabriel) Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd.

GOOD MAN! I hardly ever hear anyone mention Genesis when they had Gabriel as frontman (Lamb Lies Down on Broadway) GREAT STUFF!:)

Although I'm forced to agree that Led Zeppelin is the best band (in the classic, blues rock sense)...I still prefer Boston, sans the most recent stuff.

However, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here give them a run for the money, in my opinion.

Best band? That's a tough one... but I do love Paul "The Voice" Rodgers of the original Bad Company.

Ummm, best band? Glenn Miller? Frankie Yankovic? The OSU Marching Band? LZ and the Beatles were probably the best, but there was a lesser known band that could have shared the stage with those guys. In fact, they did play Carnegie Hall. Glass Harp was the name.

If it's just between LZ and U2, it's LZ hands down. But I'd like to throw in the Grateful Dead (since we're not talking most rocking band, but best). That may be a minority opinion, though...

Certainly some good music...I don't know if they can quite take "the best" label or not, though.

With all deference to Led Zeppelin, I do want to stick my neck out with The Beatles. I find it hard for any album by anyone to compete with some of their later albums. In my humble opinion...

I am the only person I know of that likes good music who is not in love with the Beatles. I could listen to Rocky Raccoon over and over and over, or really anything on the White Album, but it ends about there.
I cannot deny their amazing talent, I just am not a great fan.

O/T, but did you see Across the Universe? I loved the concept and the way it was done; the movie had the flaws of almost all movies, though.

Edit: About the best...I cannot separate what I like and what is best, so since i like the Dead a whole bunch and they are well-liked by others, I can guess that they could have a chance at the best. But they're not my favorite band, but I doubt I can say Wilco is the best band, since they are too new and un-known for that...yet.
