Ave Maria and music

For personal listening I like medieval music.

I was shocked the other day when I heard one of these songs (usually from Latin manuscripts redone by modern "early music" groups like the Waverly Consort). It was a great song about the angel's announcement to Mary of her pregnancy and then Jesus' birth. In the middle of it, the phrase "Ave Maria" occurs.

Should I trash the song? Is this phrase always odious and does it always mean ungodly veneration above a normal healthy respect for the mother of Christ?

Luke 1:28
et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit have gratia plena Dominus tecum benedicta tu in mulieribus

Ruben, that very phrase is included! Oops, relistening now....those might be the words....

p.s. I like to party like its 1099!

In the standard Ave Maria it's not till you get to Sancta Maria that you get into the part that goes beyond what Scripture says. Of course in other pieces you might hear "Mater misericordia" and other similar absurdities.

Here is a link to the song (from the manuscripts of the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat):

Cuncti simus concanentes; Ave Maria ( x 2)
Let us all sing together: Hail Mary ( x 2)

(1) Virgo sola existente, en affuit angelus
Gabriel est appelatus, atque missus caelitus
Clara facieque dixit; Ave Maria x 2
Cuncti simus concanentes; Ave Maria x 2

As the Virgin was alone, lo an angel appeared.
He is called Gabriel and sent from heaven.
And with shining mien he said: Hail Mary
Let us all sing…

(2) Clara facieque dixit audite carissimi x 2
En concipies Maria; Ave Maria x 2
Cuncti simus concanentes; Ave Maria x 2

And with shining mien he said, hear, most beloved,
lo you shall conceive, Mary: Hail Mary
Let us all sing…

(3) En concipies Maria audite carissimi x 2
Pariesque filium; Ave Maria x 2
Cuncti simus concanentes; Ave Maria x 2

Lo you shall conceive, Mary, hear, most beloved,
you shall bear a son: Hail Mary
Let us all sing…

(4) Pariesque filium audite carissimi x 2
Vocabis eum Jhesum; Ave Maria x 2
Cuncti simus concanentes; Ave Maria x 2
You shall bear a son, hear, most beloved,
you shall call him Jesus: Hail Mary

Let us all sing…

Doesn't ave translate into "Hail"? All that is is a greeting; one I believe Jesus uses in Matthew 28 after his resurrection.
