Has anyone read(ing) Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire? Thornwell and others recommended this so to improve one's literary rhetoric.

I have the abridged edition (only 1000 pages!).

Hey:

Gibbon's book is excellent. He was, himself, a non-Christian. Depending upon the abridgment you have it could be good or bad.

Historicists use this book to prove their interpretation of Revelation. It was said that missionaries only had to carry the Bible and a copy of Gibbon's book in order to prove the prophetic elements of the Bible.

The Decline and Fall starts around 98 AD and follows the political landscape of the Roman Empire up until around 800 AD.

Enjoy the read,

-Rob
