Having a 5-year old in the house has renewed my appreciation for the importance of stories in the formation of character, and returned me to reading more children's literature than I had for some time. This has led to such happy discoveries as Amanda Pig and the Whale Jasconius.
It also makes me even happier to highlight a book that kids a little older than 5 may well appreciate: West of Moonlight, East of Dawn by Isabel Chenot. It has often been retold, but I think this version makes more clear than the others the fundamental truth at the heart of the story.
