Hi everyone!

The Puritan Board Bowl Bash is upon us! We will use the same rule set as we did last year, namely each of the bowl games other than the Big SIx (Cotton, Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, Peach) and the National Championship Game count for one point. The Big Six count for two points, and the National Championship Game counts for four points.

In the unlikely event of a COVID cancellation, the game will be removed from consideration

All game picks must be submitted before 11:00 CST on Friday, December 17.

This means that the National Championship Game must be picked blind (that is, the National Championship Game must involve your two semifinal winners, and from them you choose the champion, all before the bowl games begin on Friday.

Our contestants are:

@Edward and @Eyedoc84 (plus 3 points)
@ChristianLibertarian (plus 1 point)
@Edm
@SolaScriptura
@kainos01
@earl40
@toddpedlar

Bonus points will be tallied from the start. So the current score is Edward and Eyedoc84 at 3, ChristianLibertarian at 1, and the rest, 0.

If when all is said and done, we have a tie among one or more contestants, here are the Tiebreakers:

1) National Champion correctly picked
2) National Champion runner-up correctly picked
3) National Championship Game Score (using the usual metric)
4) Total number of correct games picked
5) Order of entry

The Winner of this contest has the honor of serving as the Grand Poohbah of the 2022 College Football Pick'Em Contest, or designating a replacement commissioner.

I have greatly enjoyed running the contest this year - thanks to Ben, who won last year, for yielding the mantle to me. It's been great fun as always!

Here is the slate! All picks must be in by 11am Central Time Friday! I will send out a reminder Wednesday and Thursday evenings!

All times CST

A reminder to me and everyone else, but particularly @earl40, @ChristianLibertarian, and @kainos01, you need to get entries in by 11am Central time tomorrow or you’ll lose out on entering the Bash.

Oh and while I am pointing three fingers at you, I’ve got my other fingers pointing at me as I’ve not submitted my picks yet either!

Gentlemen -

I have a mea maxima culpa to offer in my Grand Poohbah-ness over these proceedings. My brothers I have made an oversight and I hereby apologize to you all, but especially to EdM and Lane, whom I have most directly offended in this matter.

When approached by EdM to have Lane take his spot in the Bowl Bash, I agreed to it, but should not have, as I had forgotten conversations about the nature of the bowl bash that took place many years ago among participants then.

The issue had come up of the possibility of someone wanting to hand over their entry to the Bowl Bash (and the chance to run the show the next year which is the grand prize) to another person and we had a healthy discussion of the issue.

Ultimately it was decided at the time that handing off the entry wasn’t what we wanted the nature of qualifying for the bash to be. Participation was to be earned through winning a weekly contest, and the ability to participate in the bash and possibly earn the right to run the show the following year wasn’t transferable.

If someone didn’t wish to participate in the Bash (perhaps because they knew they couldn’t serve as the Grand Poohbah if they won the Bash) then they should sit it out. Later an alternative idea came about wherein if one felt as though they couldn’t run the show if they won, then they could participate in the bash but designate a Grand Poohbah to do the duty.

Ironically of course this is why I’ve run the show this year, as Ben won last year and decided he couldn’t do the week-in-week-out work of running the show. I should have recalled the whole setup of the bash as requiring weekly wins but not something one can hand off to someone else.

Again, Lane, Ed, please accept my apologies. We need to go on without your entry to be consistent with the past practice and my mistake here is entirely due to my faulty memory.

Todd

Thank you for your note, Todd, and no problem. I forget things too, as I’m confident we all do. I appreciate you using your powers as Grand Poobah to be a steward of the customary rules that govern this annual contest. Like you, I desire maximal participation in our weekly event as well as in our Bowl Bash, but I also see the value of the “tradition” of a weekly win being a requirement for participation in the Bowl Bash.

Lane - I am so sorry you didn’t win a week, brother. Seriously, it can be verified that at multiple points throughout the season I said “I hope Lane wins this week!” But you’re a fierce competitor and I am confident you’ll do well next season. God bless you, brother!

Bowl Bash Update #1 -

After the opening games through December 18, here is our leader board (includes bonus points, as they are treated as correct picks from the beginning), with no surprises as to who are at the top. Denver is the sole soul who had confidence in the Hilltoppers, and thus stands alone at the top:

8: Eyedoc84
7: Edward
4: kainos04, Sola Scriptura, toddpedlar

I'll update again next Monday morning, after the next 8 games have been played

Hi everyone -

Here's Bowl Bash Update #2 -

After the 15 games through December 25, here is our leader board (includes bonus points, as they are treated as correct picks from the beginning). The race has tightened up somewhat over the past several days of games, with seven more games played (with the Hawaii Bowl being cancelled or there would have been 8 more since the last update).

11: @Edward
10: @Eyedoc84
9: @kainos01, @toddpedlar
8: @SolaScriptura

I'll update again Wednesday morning after the December 27 and 28 games, which will bring us to approximately the halfway point in terms of games played, which will be at that point 22.

Well, TAMU obviously isn't going to win the Gator Bowl. "Covid 19 ...and other issues". Most of the disabled players apparently got Covid shots. Reminds me of the the old Dilbert cartoon.

And Miami ducks the Tony the Tiger Bowl. That's two of my picks down. Which might be a good thing.

And let's throw out the Holiday Bowl, the Military Bowl (not to be confused with the Armed Forces Bowl), Hawaii Bowl, and the Fenway Bowl.

I could understand Vandy ducking UGA (twice) last year, but some of these looked to be decent matchups.

My policy on tossing bowls is those which are cancelled outright or have teams other than those originally scheduled to play. Doesn't matter if the game itself is played by replacement teams. That means so far the bowls which are removed from consideration:

Hawaii, Military, Holiday, Fenway, Gator, Sun, Arizona. (so far).

Any further games which are cancelled or altered in terms of team composition will be tossed out.

Finally, the Semifinal and final are also subject to this criterion - if any of those games is cancelled due to COVID, the result will be null and void.

To clarify:

If one of the Semifinal games is cancelled, it will not be considered in scoring, and contestants will not get credit with correctly selecting the team who is able to play in the final from that semi.

In addition, if either Semifinal game is cancelled, then the tiebreaker criterion which considers getting the correct two teams in the final will not be in consideration (it will be skipped if there is need to resort to tiebreakers)

If the final is cancelled, then that game too will not be considered in the ranking of contestants.

Bowl Bash Status Report #4

An eventful day - Ben grabbed a point on the field with his pick of Maryland in the Pinstripe Bowl, but Ben and I gave a point back with our pick of the Cyclones over Clemson.... :/ Can we say we hate the opt out rule?

15: @Edward, @kainos01
14: @Eyedoc84
13: @SolaScriptura, @toddpedlar

13 games left, and 22 game points are still on the table.

I will report standings daily now, through the rest of the bash.

I’m with ya there! Some say a playoff would fix it, but I’m not so sure.
I was trying to imagine a star player on an NCAA basketball team opting out of the National Championship game... it would NEVER happen. How anyone can leave their team behind at that point is beyond me.

Bowl Bash Status Report #5

Yesterday's games will result in much frustration for many in the SEC - even if Tennessee isn't everyone's favorite, I think it's hard to argue that Purdue had a successful goal line stand; the stoppage of forward progress was called too early, but given that, the replay officials didn't have too much they could do. Nevertheless, that was the result... and what a wild game! An excellent Peach Bowl matchup held our attention too, I imagine!

At this point, I must announce that at this point Denver has been eliminated from the competition. At this point, even if all his picks are correct, he cannot mathematically come out on top. In that case, Edward would be the winner, as there aren't enough games in which he and Denver differ in their picks. Thanks for playing, Denver, and congratulations on having such a great first season with us! Join us again next fall! :)

The rest of us still have hope. Play on!

19: @Edward
18: @kainos01
17: @SolaScriptura, @toddpedlar
14: @Eyedoc84

9 games left, and 17 game points are still on the table.

With the games today, much will be decided. Stay tuned!

Bowl Bash Status Report #6 (Yes I know the Orange Bowl still has 7 and a half minutes left, but I wanted to get this posted, and it's a pretty safe bet with the Bulldogs leading by 31...)

A couple of blowouts today, and the field is winnowing. Unfortunately for Ben, Michigan's ouster means he's unable to win. Thanks again, for the opportunity to run the show in your stead after last year's win.

The rest of us can win, but it really boils down to the championship between Georgia and Alabama, and the Sugar Bowl between Ole Miss and Baylor. Will have details on Monday to set the stage for the final showdown!
