I'm doing a bit of research on the term "boasting". I've studied the BDAG and Kittels on the term but I've heard from some sources that this has a martial or military sense. In other words it can connote the kind of confidence one gets as people in a group begin to chant to motive one another for action. Chants are used by all sorts of groups to motivate people to action. I'm trying to see if there is any use of that term from a grammatico-historical sense that can support that this kind of connotation carries into some Biblical passages.

One example I can think of is Goliath coming out every day and telling everyone how strong he is and that nobody can face him. David responds to Goliath's boasting by boasting in what the Lord is about to do through him.

Anybody seen any work on this concept?
