covenanting

I just read Scotland's National Covenant, and it seems to explicitly forbid the union of that country with England, as it would cause "such confusion... as this realm could be no more a free monarchy; because by the fundamental laws, ancient privileges, offices, and liberties of this kingdom...

What is the history of doing these covenants between the ascension of Christ and the Scottish Covenants? Where can one find these covenants from Geneva, Hungary, Holland and France? In other words, what is the historical background of the idea of entire societies making a covenant with God?

What does "mediatorial" in "mediatorial kingship of Christ" refer to? What is being mediated? What are the parties on either side? I am interested in mediatorial kingship as it relates to both the Church and the State.
