I have been in a discussion with an individual on the topic of the atonement and he told me that he believes in something called Penal Substitution Theory which, in his opinion, is distinct from Penal Substitution. I am familiar with most major atonement views, but Penal Substitution Theory is new to me. Is it even a thing?

Did he say what he meant by it? I've never heard of such a thing but it seems to communicate that he thinks the penal substitution is the best explanation of the atonement but leaves open the possibility for disagreement on the topic since Scripture doesn't expressly say in as many words that Christ died as the penal substitute for his people.

I think your friend may be confused. Penal Substitution is sometimes called Penal-Substitution Theory. I searched my Logos library as well as a quick scan on the web and found no difference between the two.

I agree. I thought it best to check with the resident PB scholars.

The two would be the same thing.
