Looking for noteworthy book recommendations on the function/calling/qualification/role of Elders primarily, deacons as well but not my primary concern.

I am looking to compile a few resources to use alongside scripture for a group study, and eventually may be laying the groundwork for teaching/training newcomers and prospective elders in our congregation. Baptist context if that makes a difference.

Thank you in advance!

I am reading The Elder by Cornelis Van Dam and it is excellent so far!

Regarding the office of deacon, I recommend The Ministry of Mercy for Today by PY DeJong.

Though written by a Presbyterian, I do recommend the below book.
With a Shepherd's Heart: Reclaiming the Pastoral Office of Elder by John R. Sittema (Author)

It would also serve a Baptist Author well in my opinion. This book is also formatted to fit well within a small group discussion type setting.

Another great benefit of this book, is that it also very piratical at times and will encourage elders to discuss and address "Case Study" type scenarios that typically could arise within a local congregation. As a former Baptist, who is now a Presbyterian I think this book is written with the intent to be beneficial towards any congregation that is seeking to maintain an Elder form of Church government.

If you hope to train elders, you should take a look at the IX Marks book on elders, and also at Bob Thune's study for elders.

Both are short and easy to read. At the same time, they challenge elders and would-be elders spiritually rather than merely presenting a how-to framework for the job. Both are Baptist-friendly.

Those books are probably less useful if you are trying to convince or educate your whole congregation about elders. The books are aimed at elders, not so much at the whole congregation.

Helpful book on elders:
The Shepherd Leader, by Timothy Witmer

Helpful book on deacons:
The New Testament Deacon, by Alexander Strauch

Thank you for your responses everyone. Dropped some change on amazon and looking forward to brushing up. I added 'Finding Faithful Elders and Deacons by Thabiti Anyabwile to the list as well as I have been looking at that one for a while.

This is not a book suggestion but I highly recommend this sermon by Dr. Richard D. Phillips titled, "The Calling of Elders." It is an exposition based on Titus 1:5-11. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

At our church Deacon's have to read "New Testament Minister of Mercy" by Strauch, and a book called "Serving God, Serving God's People." As well a Word document of about 30 pages that is really good. I can send it to you if you want to send me your email.
