...,which occurred in Arkansas, was a battle during the early part of the War Between the States that my great, great grandfather experienced and survived as a private in the Confederate Army. I don't know much about it. I just got a book from the library that has a chapter on it, so that may be helpful. Do any of our Southern brethren have any knowledge of this battle or know of books that cover it?

I toured the battlefield in the fall of 2008. I'll see what I can turn up. As I recall, it was the only battle of the war where native American troops participated as regular infantry units, part of the multicultural forces fielded by the Confederates against the then monochromatic invaders.

A quick Google turned up this book:

Pea Ridge: Civil War Campaign in the West. Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1992.

Review here: The Trans-Mississippian: Outstanding book about the battle of Pea Ridge

Looks like it's available at Barnes & Nobles. Pea Ridge, William L. Shea, Book - Barnes & Noble

Looks like this would be your best bet.

I have the Shea book. I'll see what it tells me. It's interesting to consider that I have a relative there and a Confederate one to boot!

I didn't know you could tour the battlefield. I have to do that...in honor of my great, great, grandfather.

It's supposed to be one of the best preserved sites in the country. There's a small visitor's center, a loop road, and the tavern. It's pretty well done. It's a fairly short drive (half hour or so) from the Rogers/Bentonville area. Pea Ridge National Military Park (U.S. National Park Service)

More of an overnight trip for you. Nice area of the country (except during ice storms) and really nice folks around there. If you needed a place to worship, I can recommend the PCA church in Bentonville.

Well, bit more of an overnighter. I live on the top of the State of Illinois. It's over five hours to St. Louis. Bentonville...wow! I could visit the mecca of Walmart too!

As to a place of worship, I may be interested in the PCA church knowing some of the SBC churches in that area!

A photo of the park. I wish I had the time to do anything I'd like to do (or the money).

Yes, the Wal-Mart museum on the square in Bentonville is worth a stopover. There is a really nice Sams on the north side of Rogers, and, of course, WalMarts number 1 (Rogers) and 100 (Bentonville). (Or the really nice one on the south side of Rogers).

I agree with Edward. The WalMart museum is well worth seeing. And, Pea Ridge is GREAT! I have visited it a couple of times in the last decade when going to see my second son and his family. My Ilinois grandkids also loved the visit. Pea Ridge is beautiful, the loop drive is picturesque, and the stops along the way are also worth doing.

Besides, Ivan, at Pea Ridge the "good guys" won! ;)

I grew up going to Pea Ridge regularly. It is well worth the trip. One of my greatest 're-enactor moments' came doing Pea Ridge. I was Confederate artillery.

If you decide to come visit, let me know! My wife and I live about an hour south of the Fayetteville/Bentonville/Springdale area...
