Puritan Board Freshman
With Pope Benedict visiting America the question came to my mind is The Pope the AntiChrist? Also if The Pope is The Anti Christ how would this affect a person who is an amilinialist and believes Christ currently reigns?

We've discussed this on the board quite a bit. I myself don't believe he is. It's even been rumored that Joseph and I are beer drinking buddies. This is just a rumor. It's also a rumor that he's coming to my house to drink Franzies and play Wii tomorrow night. He's bringing the 60 inch Popatron screen. I couldn't be more excited. (At least that's the rumor.)

I'll stop goofing around now and let the others get on with their Pope trashing. Pitch forks up!!!!

He is anti-Christ (lower case A) in that he teaches a different Gospel. As for an issue like this being a conflict for those like myself who believe Christ has already begun His Holy Dominion, I don't see it, St. Paul spoke of anti-Christ after Christ was Taken into Heaven, part of the whole now/not yet thing:) YES Christ's rule has begun, but the New Era in fullness (the chaff is among the wheat, it is not burned......yet) And no! I am not an Amill alarmist (our answer to he Rapture Ready Folk:lol:) I DO think we are close to Our Lords final purging of His Earth.:2cents:

There are, indeed several threads on this topic. But it is helpful to be reminded again with the presence of the pope here in America, lest many unsuspecting people be fooled. I, for one, do agree with the Confession's statement regarding the pope being the man of lawlessness of II Thessalonians 2. I am not convinced that this is inherently incompatible with an amillennial position in and of itself.

Yes, absolutely. Ratsinger is the anti-Christ as the WCOF so clearly states.

That's OK, the last pope evidently thought Bush was the antichrist . . .

WASHINGTON DC -- According to freelance journalist Wayne Madsden, "George W Bush's blood lust, his repeated commitment to Christian beliefs and his constant references to 'evil doers,' in the eyes of many devout Catholic leaders, bear all the hallmarks of the one warned about in the Book of Revelations--the anti-Christ."

Madsen, a Washington-based writer and columnist, who often writes for Counterpunch, says that people close to the pope claim that amid these concerns, the pontiff wishes he was younger and in better health to confront the possibility that Bush may represent the person prophesized in Revelations. John Paul II has always believed the world was on the precipice of the final confrontation between Good and Evil as foretold in the New Testament. John Paul should know. He is close to perfection on his road to sainthood

Is the Pope the Antichrist?

Here is Martin Luther's answer:

"Since the Pope is a heretic, and idolater, Antichrist, and the red whore reeking with the blood of the pious, therefore we will not admit him into our presence...In fine, to make a treaty between us and the Pope, is to make a treaty between God and Belial. Nothing will come of it..."

How many of "The Antichrists" can there be? I thought THE Antichrist kinda shows that there is ONE.

Popish Creed!

I believe in the pope, binder and looser in heaven, earth, and hell, and in Simony, his only son our lord, who was conceived by the canon law and born of the Romish church. Under his power truth suffered, was crucified, dead and buried, and through the ban descended to hell, rose again through the gospel and Paul and was brought to Charles, sitting at his right hand, who in future is to rule over spiritual and wordly things. I believe in the canon law, in the Romish church, in the destruction of faith and of the communion of saints, in indulgences both for the remission of guilt and penalty in purgatory, in the resurrection of the flesh in an Epicurean life, because given to us by the Holy Father, the pope. Amen.

Can I forward this to the Vatican?

It is funny that the confessions are generally seen as being sacrosanct apart from aspects of RPW and the Pope.

I do not understand why people have such a problem with the office of the Pope being an organ of antichrist, if the role of antichrist in the bible is examined it is not really that grounbreaking to identify the Pope with antichrist.

I feel that a retreat from the confessional position here is really sending the wrong message to roman catholics, the roman church is not an acceptable institution.

I know it is funny, but what is truly sad, is that both America and England need to here it, rather than the Vatican.

Great quote! It is a travesty that the U.S. welcomes him with open arms. No nation should recognize him as a soverign over church or country. I wish more Presbyterians would stand with our Protestant forefathers. The word Protestant by its definition means those who protest. We protest that which opposes the gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

John in his epistle states that there are many anti-Christ's that have gone out into the world. He indicates that it is the spirit of the anti-Christ. Presbyterians have have historically held that the papacy is anti-Christ. This was certainly the position of the Puritans who wrote the WCOF.

I do not believe my ignorance on the issue is 'a retreat from the confessional position'.

Equating the office of pope to the Antichrist and 'the man of sin' and the 'man of lawlessness' is difficult to do, in my opinion. Don't misinterpret my stupidity as rebellion.

You are absolutely right brother.

Here's another quote:

Calvin this time--

Some persons think us too severe and censorious when we call the Roman pontiff Antichrist. But those who are of this opinion do not consider that they bring the same charge of presumption against Paul himself, after whom we speak and whose language we adopt... I shall briefly show that (Paul's words in II Thess. 2) are not capable of any other interpretation than that which applies them to the Papacy.

And he then goes on and does just that. This quote is from the Institutes. Wonderful reading for anyone who wishes to really prepare for the Pope coming to America!
