What are some of your favorite Christian bands to listen to?

I've really been enjoying "My Soul Among Lions." They set the Psalms to folk.

I'm looking for new stuff to listen to for my commute to and from work.

The old time opera star of bygone days, John Charles Thomas recorded lovely versions of uninspired hymns. I used to love 1950s gospel groups such as the Swan Silvertones, Dixie Hummingbirds and Soul Stirrers. I don't listen to much anymore. Leadbelly, Charlie Patton, Memphis Minnie, Big Joe Williams, secular mostly but I used to listen to them quite a bit.
 
I am not really into so called Christian music but I have enjoyed some of the Celtic music which puts traditional hymns to Celtic type music.
 
CDs in the Celtic Source series which youcan see on Amazon and some tracks are on youtube. Below are links to "be thou my vision" and "oh the deep deep love of Jesus"


 
I quite like some of the Rend version , they also do a version of ‘be thou my vision’. The Gettys are also quite popular and I see they are doing their version of the Psalms.

I have yet to find any modern bands that are considered “Christian Bands “ that I enjoy. Maybe I’m listening wrong, but they all seem to do the same songs that I hear praise and worship bands do in some churches. And I don’t care for them there either. I will be looking into the Celtic psalms...that sounds neat.
 
They haven’t got the Psalms done yet but did announce that was a project they are hoping to start shortly

He is probably my new favorite contemporary Christian songwriter. I only fairly recently discovered him when a RE gave me his album. I listened to the discs on repeat in the car.

Though not, of course, EP, the Gettys are essentially Reformed in their lyrics and better - by miles - than much that is being sung in non-EP churches. I just recently recalled seeing this and it speaks well of their convictions:

In 2012, Getty's hymn "In Christ Alone" was involved in a controversy with the Presbyterian Church (USA) hymnal committee in the creation of their new hymnal "Glory to God". The committee requested permission from Getty and Stuart Townend to use an alternative lyric to the phrase "Till on that cross as Jesus died/the wrath of God was satisfied", changing "wrath of God was satisfied" to "the love of God was magnified."[34]

Getty and Townend rejected this lyric change, and the hymnal committee barred the hymn from the book. Mary Louise Bringle, committee chair, defended their decision saying: "The song has been removed from our contents list, with deep regret over losing its otherwise poignant and powerful witness." The decision to change the text arose when members of the committee found the alternate text in the Celebrating Grace Hymnal published in 2010. They assumed the songwriters had agreed to this change, but upon request of the hymn, found that the text used in the Celebrating Grace Hymnal had not been approved by the writers. Capitol CMG Publishing, managers of the song, said it is working with the Celebrating Grace Hymnal's publisher to fix the problem.[35]

The controversy was covered by several major news outlets, including USA Today, The Washington Post, and The Economist, and sparked a theological discussion in the church centered on the subject of atonement and the doctrine of propitiation. Getty was quoted as saying:

"First, it's important to express how truly honored we feel that these groups would consider adding "In Christ Alone" to their hymnals. We support the approach they take of studying the lyrics of hymns as they select music worthy to be sung and preserved. However, we believe altering the lyrics would remove an essential part of the gospel story as explained throughout Scripture. The main thread of what we see revealed throughout the Old and New Testament is the need for man to be made right with God. The provided path toward reconciliation came through Christ's predetermined and perfect sacrifice on the cross, satisfying God's wrath once and for all."

I am no fan of contemporary Christian music, but I make an exception for the Irish band Rend Collective.
The first song I heard from them was "Undignified" about David's dancing before the Lord and his wife Michael (who was a Benjamite) dispising him in 2 Samual 6. The next song that has become a kind of theme song for my life was "Above Everything Else." These folk speak to my heart in the very depths of my soul. Give them a chance. Maybe they will stir your hearts like they have mine. The Lord is often just "Too Much" for me. Take some time and see if you agree.

The only song I know of that I have heard from Rend Collective is "Build Your Kingdom Here" which strikes me as being influenced by the NAR. I can only find Pulpit & Pen talking about that, so maybe it's a stretch, but it did sit with me the wrong way. I like the general idea of the song (in a Psalm 72 sort of way), but it seems off.

I've found what I've been looking for. Our Daily Bread puts out instrumental CDs which are incredibly well done. Take a listen. They are my new favorite!
